Fundamentals of Design for Manufacture (DFM)

Duration: one or two days

The term "DFM" has a different meaning for many people. This workshop will help define DFM issues as they relate to cost in the fabrication and assembly processes. An overview of both these processes will set the stage for a discussion of the issues related to each. Issues such as material types and selection, dataset requirements, component land pattern design, and clear and concise documentation will be discussed. In addition, the group will discuss how and where High Density Design (HDI) fits into the standard cost models.

A good portion of the materials presented come from existing and/or proposed IPC standards. These "snapshots" serve to fortify the discussion as well as provide a look at how to apply their principles to produce a cost effective printed board assembly.
